ASTM A36 Carbon Steel vs. ASTM A572 Grade 50 :

Both ASTM A36 carbon steel and ASTM A572 grade 50 are iron alloys. Both are furnished in the as-fabricated (no temper or treatment) condition. They have a very high 99% of their average alloy composition in common. For each property being compared, the top bar is ASTM A36 carbon steel and the bottom bar is ASTM A572 grade 50.

Standard Specification for High-Strength Low-Alloy

Abstract. This specifiation covers the standard requirements for Grades 42 [290], 50 [345], 55 [380], 60 [415], and 65 [450] of high-strength low-alloy columbium-vanadium structural steel shapes, plates, sheet piling, and bars for applications in bolted, welded, and riveted structures in bridges and buildings.

A572 steel

ASTM A572 Specification refers to High-Strength Low-Alloy Steel Plate for structural building, among the 5 steel grades of 42, 50, 55, 60 and 65, Grade 50 is one most common steel in applications where need more strength and less weight, use steel plate of this grade other than ordinary carbon steel will make the steel structure with same steel strength but lighter weight.

ASTM Weathering Steel Specifications Central Steel Service

The atmospheric corrosion resistance of A242 is substantially better than that of carbon steels such as A36 and A572-50 with or without copper addition. When properly exposed to the atmosphere, A242 is suitable for many applications in the unpainted condition. ASTM A242 has a 50ksi minimum yield strength and a 70ksi minimum tensile strength.

A36 (Grade 50) versus A572 Gr 50 - Structural engineering

I selected ASTM A572 Grade 50 rods because of the tensile strength of 65 ksi, which meets my shear resistance requirements. The project is Design-Build, and the contractor is requesting the use of ASTM A36, Grade 50 rods, which I'm assuming are more readily available (thus cheaper).

ASTM A572 Grade 50 Steel Plates, A572 Grade 50 Steel

This grade is mainly used for structural applications and offers the best results. On the other hand, grade 50 here is having high tensile strength, considered an ideal choice of various applications due to its excellent strength. The A572GR50 steel plates have high yield and tensile strength and combines low weight. It is even ductile and easy

ASTM A572 Steel - Ultra-High Strength - Copperloy

A572 Grade 50 has a smaller cross-section that can support the same or larger load than A36 steel or steels that are not structural grade. This directly correlates to the overall weight of the ramp where the higher the steel’s Yield Strength, the less the ramp can weigh. A572 Grade 50 has a 139% greater Yield Strength than A36 steel.
